This album's brilliance doesn't lie in its being the first rock opera. It lies in the way the Pretty Things tell a story with sounds more than words: the stern flutes on "Private Sorrow", the frantic harmonies on "Balloon Burning", and most of all the amazing main riff of "Death" (a must-hear). May 29,  · Due to lack of record label attention to The Pretty Things and a complete snafu with the American distribution of the album by the unlikely Tamla Motown subsidiary Rare Earth label, S.F. May 16,  · referencing S.F. Sorrow, CD, Album, Mono, RE, RM, there are several MONO editions out there now. This year Snapper CD release is the best one so far, to my ears - and is certainly superior to the year Madfish SDPCD issue (which does not sound mono to me, instead a weirdly flat stereo -avoid)/5(K). The album, for those unfamiliar, tells the story of "S.F. Sorrow," a sort of British Everyman -- think of a working-class, luckless equivalent to the Kinks' Arthur, from cradle to grave. The tale and the songs are a bit downbeat and no amount of scrutiny can disguise the fact that the rock opera S.F. Sorrow is ultimately a bit of a confusing. Reply
